CD's offer some serious advantages that shouldn't be ignored: No record wear, No skipping, Wider choice of new sounds, Cheaper and recordable media, Compact size. You will need two table top CD Players or a single dual cd player and a mixer to form a complete DJ CD Setup. A number of highly regarded DJ's have been known to spin with up to four CD Players playing simultaneously and in synch! Advantages of table top CD Players are larger jog wheels providing a more tactile feel, larger display screens and more room for easier access to player functions. Disadvantages are its larger size / heavier weight and higher cost. Mobile DJs have traditionally preferred dual-cd players but with the introduction of new cases designed for easier transport of tabletop players many have converted to the table top models. Dual-cd players and single-tray rackmountable players are also widely used in installations where space is limited or installed in racks in places such as health clubs, or as part of broadcast or PA system.
Many models offer:
Cueing: With digital decks (versus tunrtables), it's an instanteous press of the button. And with cues predefined, you can instantaneously jump to any number of points on a CD or even within a track.
Loops: Like it sounds, you have the ability to define loops on many of these players. There's often a smart loop option as well that enables you to automatically cut down the bars in a beat loop.
Hot Starts: Like cues, you can predefine several points within a track and do an instant remix or one handed juggle just by hitting the hot start buttons.
Key Lock/Master Tempo: Different name, same function. You can speed up or slow down playback but keep the key the same. Good for learning juggling.
Sampler: Some units include samplers. Normally these can be looped as well.
