DJ Controllers

DJ digital controllers are similar in operation to a mixer/turntable/CD turntable set up so traditional DJs, or turntabalists, that are used to using these can generally relate to them better than a software interface. Some come with substantial shuttle jogs that mimic turntable control of a track. The software on the computer will generally play mp3 or wave files. The upside of using these, or any software-based DJ setup, is that there is no need to carry around CDs or records. This is particularly beneficial to Mobile disc jockeys who are increasingly using computer based DJ set ups. Its also easier and more convenient to find music in MP3 or WAV format on-line as more and more brick-and-mortar record stores shut down.

The price of DJ controllers has recently come down to the point where they are now a lot more common and increasingly DJs are using these instead of CD or vinyl turntables. Many of these controllers now include popular version of DJ software so there is often no need to purchase software. The software functions to assign most audio formats to each channel (or the same track for a juggle). The audio is then channeled back out through the soundcard to the mixer which hooks up to a home stereo, self-powered/active speakers or an amplifier/speaker combination. These new-age controllers are amongst our hottest selling products.

It is important to note that some controllers come with built-in soundcards and others do not. Usually, the less expensive controllers ($150.00 range) will not have built-in soundcards. If your controller does not already have a built-in soundcard, we recommend you add the optional Numark DJ I/O USB Audio Interface, Ikey iConnex or any similar audio interface / soundcard in order to have the ability to cue music with your headphones and for higher audio output quality.

Finally, there's the Audio Interface boxes used with existing, conventional turntables or DJ CD units with timecode discs, enabling you to play the music stored on your computer with the tactile feel of actual DJ equipment. Examples of these interfaces include the Rane Serato, Mixvibes, Virtual DJ and similar products. These interfaces are favored by the Professional / Club DJ segment of the market but is generally the most expensive and least portable option.
